3:39PM - Our Town

Every Year my city hosts a carnivial in Febuary/March area. When I was a kid I used to go every year and get sick on the rides with my dad. The last time I went was with one of my friends on Febuary 18, 2001.

We were getting off a ride and the people in the back were watching the race and I leaned over the bar to find out how Father and Son were doing. Each were way in the front, in front of Gordan and I was happy.

My friend drops me off at home and I walk in the house and my mom and dad jump up from in front of the tv. I look at my dad's face and that's when he told me that there had been a really bad crash and it didn't look good. I had never and have yet to again see my dad cry. I sat on the couch with them till late that night. When the news finally came in, the tears started coming. I refused to go into my room till my mom took down my poster I had up of him. I was watching cartton network at that point...anything but the news. And scrolling across the bottom of the screen, like a natural disaster, was the news that the 7 time champion had died in an accident at the Daytona 500.
Since that day I have not been back to Our Town, as the carnival is called.

Tommorow my friend begged me to go back with her. I figured it's been 4 years, and there is no connsction to him at this festival. With tommorow approaching, I am flooded with memories of that day. Amazing how much he touched our lives.

Post an entry explaining how your day went the day you found out that our beloved was finally defeated.

12:22PM

I woke up this morning, and checked the results of the 500 online (I'm on vacation in New York so I was at the Met Muesum yesterday instead of watching it)

It very much upset me that Gordan won. I was very pissed. Junior did get 3rd though so... Good number at least. However, as Dale used to say.... 2nd place is first loser so....

Good start for the year anyways.

Do you know a person or an organization with a unique and original idea to address or solve needs in their community? If so, we want to know about them. The Dale Earnhardt Legend Leadership Award was created to do just that – recognize great ideas and problem solving of community needs by individuals or organizations. Deadline for all entries is December 31, 2004. Winners will be announced and recognized at Dale Earnhardt Day on April 29, 2005. The Legend Leadership Award seeks to highlight the importance of leadership in improving people’s lives and to showcase resourceful leaders that are bringing about positive change. By recognizing and sharing the stories of these leaders, The Dale Earnhardt Foundation hopes to inspire others to become leaders in their own communities.

10:08PM - What is this NOW?

What is NASCAR thinking tonight? Let's just give Jeff Gordon 5 bounce points and credit him for leading 10 laps. What kind of start was that? When the race actually started under GREEN Michael took the lead so in all realality...Jeff Gordon would have never got the first 5 points for leading the race (such BS) and since NASCAR started the race under caution, when they started they should have been single file, because there were no cars a laps down. What is NASCAR doing? BIG mistake after another. Getting fed-up with NASCAR. What will happen to NASCAR if they don't stop pissing off the fans and changing the rules whenever they feel like it.

10:01PM - Tribute to Dale...at an interesting place.

Tomorrow's Dale's birthday, and I figured I'd share this.

I was browsing Newgrounds one day and I found something rather interesting...a Flash tribute to Dale Earnhardt, and it's not some cruel joke. It can be found here:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/12671

It contains a poem, as well as pictures of Dale and several reaction quotes. It was made about two weeks after he was killed, and it caused me to shed a few tears (and I never cry).

7:00AM - YES!!!!!!

Two Florida newspapers dropped their challenge Monday to a state law restricting access to autopsy photos that passed after the death of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, citing a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision. The papers sued in Broward County after a medical examiner refused to release the photos, saying the restriction violated the state constitution. Newspapers sought access to the photos as questions arose over how Earnhardt died in the 2001 crash and whether better safety equipment might have saved him. The papers voluntarily dismissed the case Monday, weeks before the 4th District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach was scheduled to hear the case. The papers decided to drop the case because it would be difficult to win after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a separate case about photographs of former deputy White House counsel Vince Foster. The court decided the pictures should remain sealed, citing privacy concerns of the family. The Foster and Earnhardt cases have the same legal logic, said University of Florida law Professor Jon Mills, who filed a brief on behalf of the driver's widow, Teresa Earnhardt, in the U.S. Supreme Court case

12:36PM

Dale's Birthday is April 29th. Please remember this special day.

Current mood: cheerful

12:24PM - From Daleearnhardtinc.com

Fans have been asking, so here’s the answer you’ve been waiting for – Dale Earnhardt Day is set for Thursday, April 29.

For the past two years, people from all walks of life have come from all corners of the country to take part in the birthday celebration of the seven-time NASCAR champion and fan favorite. And, this year will be no different as fans gather at our corporate headquarters on our co-founder’s special day.

The day-long celebration will be held from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. and, just like years before, fans will be treated to areas of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. that are not normally open to the general public.
However, this year there will be a distinct theme involved for Dale’s birthday celebration. We’re going to do it Daytona style by paying tribute to the winningest driver at the World Center of Speed. With 34 trips to Victory Lane, Dale’s connection with Daytona International Speedway is a legacy all on its own.

As part of his birthday celebration, and for the first time since Dale Earnhardt, Inc. opened our doors, Dale’s winning Daytona 500 trophy from 1998 will be on display. His autographed helmet from the team, and many other items from that historic race, will also be displayed.

There will also be a video featuring more of Dale’s wins at Daytona, and his heartbreaking near misses, as well.

The Harley J. Earl trophy, that displays all the names of Daytona 500 winners from years past, will also be on hand for Dale Earnhardt Day activities. In keeping with the Legacy of what Dale started, Michael Waltrip’s 2001 and 2003 winning Daytona 500 No. 15 NAPA Auto Stores Chevrolets will be in the Interior Showroom as part of the tour.

Teresa Earnhardt, our CEO and President, will make a personal appearance just like she has in year’s past. Because Michael and Dale Jr. will be en route to California for the race that weekend, they will not be present, but will have taped personal messages for the fans. We will be announcing more activities and special appearances as Dale Earnhardt Day draws near.

Dale Earnhardt Day T-shirts and hats will be available as souvenirs of your taking part in the special day. This year, 3% of ALL merchandise purchased in the Retail Store and at DEI on that day will be donated to the Dale Earnhardt Foundation.

If you’re making the trip and need a place to stay, we have special Dale Earnhardt Day rates at the following hotels. And, there will be a complimentary shuttle to take you from their door to ours. The shuttle is also available for people who are not staying at the hotels to get to our headquarters because parking is limited.
